Screencast-O-Matic

Introduction

Screencast-O-Matic is a free and easy-to-use tool for screen capturing and recording screencasts. You can distribute your recording as a downloadable movie file or make it available online through a Screencast-o-Matic or YouTube account.

This service can be a marvelous way to capture and make readily accessible short “lecture” content, visual information, step-by-step procedural instructions, or homework feedback. Screencasting is also handy if you are looking for a way to invite your students to make class presentations.

Things You'll Need
  • A valid email address.

  • An Internet connection.

  • You must have the latest version of Java installed on your computer.

  • A microphone is necessary to add voice overs to your screencasts.

Steps

    Click the big blue "Start Recording" button at the top right corner.

    Accept/allow any requests to run Java.

    A window will pop up that will let you choose what to record (your screen, webcam, or both), the screen size (either full screen or a resizeable rectangle), what microphone to use, and a number of preference options.

    Click the Record Button (red circle icon) on the toolbar when you are ready to record your screencast. Screencast-O-Matic will give you a three second countdown before it starts to record.

    You may pause your recording at any time by clicking the Pause Button (two vertical lines) on the toolbar. You may resume your recording or finish and save.

Tips
  • You can record your screen, have simultaneous picture-in-picture (PIP) recordings from your webcam, as well as record voice.

Warnings
  • The free version of Screencast-O-Matic has a 15-minute time limit.

  • The free version of Screencast-O-Matic sports a watermark of the company's logo in uploaded videos.
