Introduction

WordPress is a popular web software and content management system that can be used to create websites or blogs. WordPress’ Basic plan is free for all users.

Steps

    Click Create Website

    You will be guided through a series of questions asking about your plans for your website to help you get started. Don’t worry too much about your answers, you can change all of this later if you need.

    At step 5, choose the plan that’s right for you, click “skip for now” to keep going with a free website.

    After creating your account, your dashboard will load and a “Need a hand?” bubble will open. Click “Let’s do it!” for more information.

    Near the bottom right you can click Settings to change a number of things about your site, such as the title and tagline, the time zone, and privacy settings. Remember to click “Save Settings” when you’re done.

    To get a new theme, click “Themes” on the left dashboard toolbar. To customize your theme, click “Customize”. From here you can change a number of things, such as your widgets, your header image, your menus, the colour scheme and standard fonts.

    To add pages, click the “Add” button next to “Pages” on the left toolbar from the dashboard. To change pages, such as those from a template, just click anywhere in that section that isn’t the “Add” button.

    Post are different from pages, think of them like blog posts. You can have many of them on a page, and they’re an easy way to update content. You can add a new one by clicking the white icon at the top right, or from your dashboard on the left.

    WordPress.com includes a number of built in plugins that can add extra functionality to your website. These can be found from the dashboard on the left.

Tips
  • You can click Reader on the top left to connect with different users and read their posts. 

  • You can connect your WordPress account to your Twitter, Facebook, or Google accounts.

  • You can follow different users’ blogs by clicking the Follow button next to the user picture.

  • Search in the topic list of the Reader to find material you are interested in.

  • To go to the Reader from your Dashboard click the W sign on the top left corner.

  • To use WordPress as a website, post your content onto different pages rather than posts.
